President-elect Donald Trump has hinted that TikTok might not be banned in the U.S. anytime soon. Speaking at a public event, he praised the app for its role in his election campaign.
“We should think about letting TikTok continue in the U.S. for a longer time,” Trump said. He shared that TikTok helped his campaign reach billions of views, calling it a “very good experience.”
This is a surprising change, as Trump’s administration had earlier tried to ban TikTok, saying it was a national security threat. Courts blocked that attempt, but the issue is still unresolved.
A new law requires TikTok to sell its U.S. operations to an American company by January 19, 2025, or face a ban. TikTok has appealed against the law, but lower courts have rejected its cases. The Supreme Court will hear TikTok’s case on January 10, 2025.
If the sale doesn’t happen, the president can give TikTok a 90-day extension. The current deadline is just one day before Trump takes office on January 20. Some believe President Joe Biden might extend the deadline before leaving office, giving Trump’s team time to decide.
The future of TikTok in the U.S. remains uncertain, but this latest update has sparked interest and debate.
