OpenAI has launched a new way to interact with its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. Users in the United States can call 1-800-CHATGPT for a free phone service. Each phone number has a 15-minute limit per month.
For users outside the US, ChatGPT is now available on WhatsApp at 1-800-242-8478. This integration makes it easier for new users to try AI.
The phone service uses OpenAI’s Realtime API, while WhatsApp uses GPT-4o mini through the WhatsApp API. Both services are designed for users who are unfamiliar with ChatGPT’s web platform.
These services offer a simpler version of ChatGPT. For advanced features, users are encouraged to use the web version.
OpenAI aims to make AI accessible to more people, especially those who aren’t tech-savvy. WhatsApp was chosen because it has nearly two billion users worldwide.
The project is similar to Google’s old GOOG-411 service, which aimed to make technology easier for everyday users. OpenAI has assured users that data from these calls will not be used to train large language models.
The services were developed quickly during OpenAI’s “hack week.” This move helps OpenAI expand its reach while managing the costs of running advanced AI.
Other updates from OpenAI include a new AI text-to-video tool called Sora and a premium subscription for $200 per month.
Currently, the phone service is available only in the US. WhatsApp is available worldwide. OpenAI will adjust the services based on user feedback.
