Donald Trump Wins the 2024 U.S. Election
In a surprising turn of events, Donald Trump has won the 2024 U.S. presidential election. He has gained enough electoral votes to win and return to the White House.
Though votes are still being counted, Trump has already reached the important number of 270 electoral votes. Polls have closed in several states, including Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Ohio, Virginia, and the Carolinas, and the results are coming in.
So far, Trump has 277 electoral votes, while Kamala Harris, his opponent, has 226. Trump won important states like North Carolina, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, which helped him take the lead. Harris won Virginia, which was a state Joe Biden won in 2020.
Trump is expected to speak to his supporters soon, while Harris is waiting to make her statement later.
Trump is also doing well in other states. In Kentucky, with 21% of the votes counted, Harris has 54.1% of the votes, while Trump has 44.4%. In Indiana, with about 60% of the votes counted, Harris is slightly ahead at 49.7%, while Trump is close behind with 48.6%.
In Georgia, Trump is leading with 51% of the votes, compared to Harris’s 48.5%. Early numbers show a close race in Georgia, which often reflects the national trend.
This election is also affecting the control of Congress. Republicans are currently leading in the Senate with 51 seats, while Democrats have 43. In the House of Representatives, Republicans lead with 183 seats, while Democrats have 153. Republicans also lead in state governor races, with 25 states in their favor, compared to 22 for the Democrats.
The tiny town of Dixville Notch in New Hampshire was the first to cast and report votes at midnight. Of its six voters, three supported Trump and three supported Harris, creating a tie. In 2020, all the voters in Dixville Notch chose Biden.
With voting now closed, over 70 million people had already voted early or by mail. The tight race in places like Dixville Notch shows how close the election is as the remaining votes are counted.
